CULTURAL SOCIETIES OF ETHNIC MINORITIES IN ESTONIA unite tens of thousands of people representing different nationalities (about 120) who regard Estonia their homeland and yet strive to preserve their own national culture, traditions and their mother tongue. At present, in Estonia there are over 200 registered societies and unions of national culture. The majority of creative groups belong to 17 umbrella organisations that are formed not only by national features but also by the closeness of aesthetic positions.
In keeping with the law, they function as non-profit organisations. The State support is carried out through budgetary financing that increases every year and through financing separate projects. The main directions in the activities of ethnic minorities´ cultural societies involve choral and vocal singing, choreography, amateur theatre art, visual and media arts, literature and publishing, educational activities, decorative and applied art as well as work in clubs and hobby groups. |
